4 Reasons to get Apple’s Newest Operating System: OS X Mavericks
It was on June 10th during The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) when Apple introduced its next operating system, OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Say goodbye to “big cat” names because the company is no longer using this theme to label their operating system updates. Apple announced that they would use locations in California instead to name their future updates of OS X. With Mavericks Apple has introduced a mixture of under-the-hood features, upgrades for expert users, and new capabilities. Apple introduced Mavericks to have better support for multiple monitors and Finder tabs. Mavericks make new improvements to performance and battery consumption and also provide an easier methods to access important files. Mavericks also include updates to Safari and Calendar applications.
1.) Tags
OS X 10.9 Mavericks introduces tags, which make organization easier than before. Thanks to the addition of tags users will be able mark any type of file on their storage with metadata. For instance, let say you have many file that are part of a specific project, project Maverick for example. You are able to create a Maverick tag and add that to all files affiliated with project Maverick. This now allows for easy access to any of project Maverick’s files as you click the tag from the Finder. Files can have more than one tag but can only be in one folder.
2.) Multiple Display Enhancements
Designers, music producers, and other artists who use Macs for creative purpose are known to need multiple displays. Before OS X 10.9 this ability was available to such Mac users. The problem was that to access these secondary displays was prove to be a hassle. Through Mavericks, artists can work with multiple displays with greater ease. Mavericks will not prompt the question to select a primary or secondary display this time around. Apple has come to the conclusion the both displays prove to be just as important as the other. Every display will now have a menu bar and dock and both displays will be able to run full-screen applications.
3.) Safari’s Power Saver
In order to save power, Apple reports that Mavericks’ updated Safari will possess the ability to distinguish from a video you are meaning to watch on a website and a video advertisement. Apple explains that Safari Power Saver will play any content if it is centered on the page, while any content off to the margins of the page, Safari Power Saver will automatically pause. This feature was created to prolong laptop battery life.
4.) Tabbed Finder

OS X 10.9 Mavericks will incorporate the TotalFinder Mac application ($18), which will transform the Finder into a tabbed window. This application was used and appreciated by many Mac users when it released. Apple noticed how convenient it was to have and made it available to all Mac users through this update.

3 Reasons to Avoid Long Distance Relationships
Long Distance Relationships are the hardest things to endure. Staying up long hours, in which the only thoughts are of the happenings to your sincerest lover. Not to mention the costs of plane tickets and arrangements you must provide to see each other. Also the time off of work you must set aside to see the warm glow of their face. The arguments you will have over the phone figuring out whose turn it is to travel. The constant reminders of love all around you with the public displays of affection you see. They all take a toll on any given individual and will create a great sense of stress that should not even exist. Long Distance Relationships are not worth enduring, and although they are meant to be temporary, they could in fact put a damper on any sustaining relationship.
Travel Expenses
With long distance relationships come the plane tickets and arrangement costs. Plane tickets are no cheap burden especially during the Holliday season. The customs in which people go through in order to board planes is already a stressful enough. The impact on the checkbook adds injury to insult. If you’re deciding to sustain your relationship at long distance, be prepared to spend about a paycheck or two on travel fairs. To all those whom are lovers on opposite coasts of the country, this will impact your budget with even greater expenses. I envy your dedication to one another, I truly do.
Time off From Work
Missing work will put you at a disadvantage when competing for advancement in your company. You might have to put your career goals at risk, or give them up entirely if you decide to move to the same location your lover is at. A location where the job market concerned with your profession is dwindling or non-existent. With the traveling that must be done in order to reach your lover, you are going to use a majority, if not all or your vacation and sick days to reach them. You will be surprised when you are taken ill and have no more sick days available. You will be a miserable person at work, but at least you are in love.
Increased Amounts of Stress
Long distance relationships will create stress and it is this stress that ultimately destroys relationships. After periods of no contact a person begins to think about the person they love so much. They wonder about what that person is currently doing, and go so far as to wonder about the people that person has become acquainted with. Questions might begin to rise which pertain to the faithfulness that person exhibits.  There are periods of worry, and there are periods of argument. Phone calls are no longer calls of interest, but become debates. Fights about one person of the relationship moving closer are enthralled leaving one person of the relationship crying. Stress is apparent with long distance relationships and should not be a factor of love.
Long distance relationships ruin relationships. If you love someone with such heart felt then you should probably get an apartment together. Put aside all of your dreams to pursue love. I mean love is a dream in itself right?

                                     Featured Artist: Tennis

Tennis is an American indie pop band from Denver and is made up of two consistent members. Husband and wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. Moore and Riley met each other in a philosophy class they took in college. During the time they met, they never knew each other as former musicians. It was when Moore spotted a guitar in Riley’s closet when that information was brought to light. Riley had previous experience as a guitar player for a small band while Moore had experience singing choir and playing piano, although never being part of a band.  It was then that the two began to jam and their love for music was made apparent. They formed the band after they got back from a seven-month sailing expedition down the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard. What is interesting though is that they never left with the intention of writing music at all. It was all the beauty they witnessed on that excursion that prompted them to capture those feeling. Using music to do that, they had accumulated enough material to start arranging once at home.

The band released several EP’s before releasing their first studio album titled Cape Dory. It was through this album that Tennis brought to life the experiences they met on that seven-month sea excursion. Through Cape Dory, the band utilizes their nautical savvy, making references to tide patterns and shifting winds. They touch upon their romance as husband and wife while on the adventure, expertly blending love with nature.  This album was met with generally good reviews but was met with some criticism which seems essential whenever a band releases projects.  Their second studio album titled Young and Old although capturing some of the unique aspects of Cape Dory, Tennis has seemed to approach this album with some different style. With the over watch of Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney (album’s producer) Tennis was able to incorporate a stronger rock’n’roll aspect to the album. This album was also met with good review but its perception should not be affected by it. Any fan of Inde-rock will enjoy this album more so since genius Patrick Carney was a part of it.

Tennis is a great Inde-band and should be in every sailor’s music library.

Experimental Solo Artist: Grimes

image

Featured Artist: Grimes

Claire Boucher comfortably known as Grimes is a musician out of Vancouver. Grimes is an experimental artist with a strong electronic presence. Launching her career at McGill University she became heavily involved with the underground electronic scene. So involved in fact, that she would constantly miss her class sessions, only showing up for exam days. McGill University took notice of this and consequently expelled her from the institution. Grimes studied ballet for 11 years and it was this practice in chorography that could fuel her willingness to dance in all most all over her music videos. Out of five music videos she has done, she has directed two, those two being Genesis, and Vanessa.

Grimes has released three albums since her arrival to the music scene. Her debut album, Geidi Primes was released on cassette through Arbutus Records in 2010. That same year she released her second studio album titled Halfaxa. In 2011 Grimes signed with 4AD records to release her third album, Visions. Visions was met with critical acclaim being perceived by The New York Times as “one of the most impressive albums of the year”. Boucher recorded Visions spending nine days in her room with complete isolation. . Through an interview with The Guardian, Grimes comments on such an experience saying,”[After nine days] you have no stimulation, so your subconscious starts filling in the blanks”, she said. “I started to feel like I was channeling spirits. I was convinced my music was a gift from God. It was like I knew exactly what to do next, as if my songs were already written.”

Grimes’ setup includes a Roland Juno-G synthesizer, a Roland SP 404 sampler, a BOSS VE-20 vocal looper, and a Line 6 M9 pedal. It is from this equipment that Grimes creates her songs with looping and layering techniques. Many of her songs incorporate vocal looping in which more than 20 vocal tracks are layered on top of each other.

Grimes is making herself known as an experimental artist. As a solo artist she is creative and fun. We should see more from this artist as the years progress, perhaps proving to us as music enthusiasts that she can indeed create a new branch of music.
