Featured Artist: Grimes
Claire Boucher comfortably known as Grimes is a musician out of Vancouver. Grimes is an experimental artist with a strong electronic presence. Launching her career at McGill University she became heavily involved with the underground electronic scene. So involved in fact, that she would constantly miss her class sessions, only showing up for exam days. McGill University took notice of this and consequently expelled her from the institution. Grimes studied ballet for 11 years and it was this practice in chorography that could fuel her willingness to dance in all most all over her music videos. Out of five music videos she has done, she has directed two, those two being Genesis, and Vanessa.
Grimes has released three albums since her arrival to the music scene. Her debut album, Geidi Primes was released on cassette through Arbutus Records in 2010. That same year she released her second studio album titled Halfaxa. In 2011 Grimes signed with 4AD records to release her third album, Visions. Visions was met with critical acclaim being perceived by The New York Times as “one of the most impressive albums of the year”. Boucher recorded Visions spending nine days in her room with complete isolation. . Through an interview with The Guardian, Grimes comments on such an experience saying,”[After nine days] you have no stimulation, so your subconscious starts filling in the blanks”, she said. “I started to feel like I was channeling spirits. I was convinced my music was a gift from God. It was like I knew exactly what to do next, as if my songs were already written.”
Grimes’ setup includes a Roland Juno-G synthesizer, a Roland SP 404 sampler, a BOSS VE-20 vocal looper, and a Line 6 M9 pedal. It is from this equipment that Grimes creates her songs with looping and layering techniques. Many of her songs incorporate vocal looping in which more than 20 vocal tracks are layered on top of each other.
Grimes is making herself known as an experimental artist. As a solo artist she is creative and fun. We should see more from this artist as the years progress, perhaps proving to us as music enthusiasts that she can indeed create a new branch of music.
